Snom's Dr. Christian Stredicke to Address ENTNET@SuperComm, June 6
Snom technology AG founder/CEO will discuss SIP Security and NAT Issues
Dr. Christian Stredicke, founder and CEO of Berlin-based SIP telephone and communications server/infrastructure vendor snom technology AG, will address the 5th International Enterprise Networking and Services Conference (ENTNET), held Monday, June 6, from 2:00-5:15 PM at Chicago's McCormick Convention Center (McCormick Place South Building S103) in conjunction with SuperComm 2005. Dr. Stredicke, an internationally-recognized expert on SIP, will discuss SIP security, with special focus on NAT/firewall issues (2:30 PM). Later in the conference, he will participate in a roundtable discussion with all participants, exploring the business case for SIP (3:50 PM).
Organized by Workshop Chair Samir Chatterjee, Associate Professor at Claremont Graduate University, the ENTNET conference brings together academic and industry experts to discuss top-of-mind enterprise networking and services issues and solutions.
In addition to Dr. Stredicke, this year's agenda includes speakers from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Avaya, Nortel, and Pingtel, and will include presentations on aspects of SIP ranging from IM and Presence, to SIP Trunking, to H.350 Multimedia Directory Services. At 4:50 PM, the conference will conclude with live demonstrations of products and technology by participating vendors and institutions.
Security is crucial to broad acceptance of IP telephony, but hype, distortion and misinformation are rampant, making implementors and customers uncertain. Dr. Stredicke will clarify the inter-related issues of content and signaling encryption, device and end-user authentication in SIP, and show how current IETF-recommended security strategies and protocols function in the network, paying particular attention to the interoperation of SIP with network address translation (NAT) and firewall apparatus. "Meaningful SIP security must be standards-based and intrinsic," says Dr. Stredicke. "Both to promote interoperability and to permit reliably securing a host of topologically- and logically-distinct VoIP implementations. Customers should not have to pay for security by penalizing flexibility and cost-effectiveness."
Christian Stredicke was born in 1968 in Germany, and matriculated at the Technical University of Berlin. From 1989 to 1992 he studied computer science, winning the Erwin Stefan Prize for outstanding scholarship in that discipline and subsequently assuming a five-year teaching position. From 1992 to 1996 he studied Business Administration, and received his Ph.D. in Engineering from the Technical University in 1997. Dr. Stredicke founded snom in 1996, building the company to prominence first in Unix systems consulting and later in the engineering and manufacture of SIP-based VoIP telephones, communications servers, and enterprise VoIP infrastructure. He now functions as CEO.
snom's product line includes several SIP telephones and core infrastructure implementing the IETF's currently-recommended strategy for content and signaling encryption (SIP(s)/sRTP), including the snom 190 (recently judged "Best Affordable SIP Phone" by Network Computing Magazine) and the large-display 360, introduced in March. snom technology AG also makes a complete line of scaleable SIP IP PBXs, communications and media servers, including the enterprise-class 4S IP PBX and enterprise/carrier 4S SIP proxy/media server suite and the tiny, powerful snom "VoIP Box": a complete, 50-user SME IP PBX with built-in voice messaging, in a tiny "appliance" enclosure.
