snom Technology to show Power-over-Ethernet-compliant VoIP Phones at Internet Telephony Expo

snom 360, 320 certified for IEEE 802.3af compatibility by PowerDsine

Global SIP telephone maker snom technology, AG (www.snom.com) has announced that its snom 360 and 320 SIP telephones have been certified fully compatible with IEEE standard (802.3af) Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) by technology pioneer PowerDsine (www.powerdsine.com). The snom phones were tested by PowerDsine against their own 'Midspan' PoE devices, and with PoE-enabled IP switches based on their integrated 802.3af integrated solutions. Internal to snom, the phones have also passed compatibility testing with power-sourcing equipment (PSE) from RedHawk, 3COM, Microsens, HP, Juce, and NetGear.

Power-over-Ethernet technology lets power be transmitted to compatible IP telephones over the same Ethernet cables that provide IP connectivity. PoE can be supplied directly from compatible head-end equipment (e.g., PoE-enabled switches). Alternatively, existing Ethernet networks can be retrofitted by inserting PoE between switches and endpoint devices, using standard 'midspan' equipment now available from a growing range of vendors. Use of PoE simplifies office and workstation wiring, and facilitates VoIP phone installation (and MACs). By enabling centralized power protection of VoIP endpoint devices, PoE makes feasible the design of robust IP telephony systems that can ride through power outages -- a must for mission-critical applications.

snom technology pioneered implementation of Power-over-Ethernet in IP telephones, obtaining its first PowerDsine certification in 2001, and maintaining its products in close harmony with evolving de-facto and official industry standards since that time. The snom 200, released in early 2004, was the first snom telephone compatible with the current IEEE 802.3af standard, promulgated in late 2003.

snom will demonstrate its full line of SIP-based IP telephones and VoIP enabling solutions at Internet Telephony Expo, October 24-27, 2005 at the Los Angeles Convention Center (Booth 530).
