New SIP NAT solution available from snom

snom technology has announced the release of their SIP NAT solution, the snom 4S NAT Filter. This software network component enables SIP phones to make calls from private networks without support from the SIP user agent.

By using Interactive Connectivity Establishment (ICE) technology, it maximizes the number of calls that can be routed directly between the phones, thus maximizing the quality. The solution works with RFC3261-compliant phones, including the snom 105/190/200/220 phones and other hard and soft phones.

The NAT Filter is placed in front of an RF3261-compliant SIP Proxy and operated on the public Internet. Operators can use one or many NAT filters, depending on the network load. It includes a STUN server which can be used by the phones to detect the nearest NAT Filter. This is an important step in user agents automatically set up for the nearest outbound proxy. Using this technology together with ICE, the overall delay of media transport can be minimized. Operators can place NAT filters in different locations to optimize the media delay.

The NAT Filter supports all SIP-compliant applications, including instant messaging, presence and online gaming. For SIP calls, it allows audio and video sessions. By following the SIP philosophy of a stateless proxy, it interacts with all future applications without the need for software upgrades.
