Calling Card System presentation
snom technology AG presents one of the first Calling Card Systems for Internet Telephony Service Providers at the CeBIT 2004 in Hanover, Germany
With its snom 4S Calling Card system, this Berlin-based company is presenting an integrated system solution, which in combination with a fully developed SIP and media software offers Internet Telephony Service Providers (ITSP) and telecommunication companies from all over the world a highly efficient solution at attractive prices.
"Besides the fact that it is based on the open VoIP standard SIP, the system offers great advantages with regard to cheaper purchase and maintenance costs, scalability, redundancy and support of standard authentication and billing mechanisms (OSP and Radius)", according to Executive Director and founder Nicolas-Peter Pohland.
The system is scalable und highly redundant because it supports various IT techniques according to demand, for instance "Load-Balancing" as well as fully automatic clustering. Based on international standards, it is easy to install and handle.
End users only need a softphone on their PC or a VoIP-telephone in order to make calls worldwide. They are identified by their 12-figure calling card number and authenticated using the PIN provided with the card. The signaling of the calls is based on Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), an open standard ratified by the Internet Engineering Task Force.
The SNOM 4S Calling Card system consists of
- SNOM 4S Proxy/Registrar
- SNOM 4S Media Server and
- a database-centric HTTP-application backend.
Web-based user interface
The system disposes of a web-based user interface, which enables the carriers to configure the system to reflect their own requirements. They can generate calling cards, manage dial plans and tariff information, and can configure the interface to the switched telephone network in an intuitive and simple manner. The SNOM 4S roxy/Registrar handles signaling, call routing and session management.
The Mediaserver manages and streams the actual media data for the voice traffic. For advanced value-added services, the SNOM 4S Mediaserver has built-in support for multi-party conferencing, voicemail, call parking, call forwarding and call transfer. The systems are open for scripting.
The 4S Calling card system supports identification, authentication, authorization and accounting. Call Detail Records are generated based on standard formats. With the SIP upgrading, the complete SNOM 4S system can be easily integrated into existing accounting systems for mobile networks.
Successful use in China
The 4S Calling Card system is currently in use by China Telecom in Shenyang, where the first trial with thousands of users has been completed successfully. "In the next few years, voice-over-IP systems will increasingly replace current systems due to the low telephone costs and also conquer private homes", Pohland states, concurring with relevant market research on the future role of Internet telephony.
